Canon 2 is a utility that allows you to play one or more ‘AIFF’ or ‘snd ’ sounds in the background (or foreground). You can add a collection of sounds to the play list, alter the order of the play list, remove selected sounds from the play list - all this in a System 7 compatible environment which is not memory hungry!
What do I need to run it?
Any Macintosh with an Apple Sound Chip (this doesn’t include the Classic, SE, Plus. and earlier). One or more sound files on your hard disk (‘AIFF’ or ‘snd ’). System 6.0.7 or later.
Quick Start
Turn up the volume on you Macintosh. Select one or more sound files and drag them onto the Canon 2 icon. Listen!
What the buttons do…
STOP - this will stop the current sound file, and prevent any further sounds from being played from the play list.
PLAY - this will start playing the contents of the play list from the selected sound file.
END - will play all the sound files in the play list and then stop at the end of the list (this has the same effect as selecting the stop button just as the last sound file has finished playing). When you click the END button it changes to the REPT button.
REPT - when the last sound file has been played, the play list will be repeated. When you click the REPT button it changes to the RAND button.
RAND - when the last sound file has been played, the contents of the play list will be shuffled and the play list will be played again. When you click the RAND button it changes to the END button.
Adding files to the play list
You can either drag another sound file onto the Canon 2 icon, or select “Add…” from the “File” menu in Canon 2. Either way, the new sound file will be added to the end of the current play list.
Removing items from the play list
To remove an item from the play list, first you must select the item to be removed. The item can now be removed by either selecting “Remove” from the “File” menu or by pressing the “Delete” key.
Changing the order of the play list
At some point you may wish to alter the order of the sound files in the current play list. You can achieve this by dragging a sound file within the play list. The sound file will be moved when you release the mouse button.
Changing the volume
Canon 2 allows you to change the volume of the sound that the sound files are being played at. It does NOT modify the master sound volume - so your normal system beeps will still be at the same volume. Use the volume control by dragging the slider from MIN (sound value 0) to MAX (sound value 255).
Known Problems
If the sound you are trying to play is a compressed resource, then it won't play. An example file would be the "Indigo" sound resource from System 7. This remains unresolved at present - any suggestions?
